One of the areas that we have become more involved in during the past few years is working with members of the military and their families. The sheer volume of returning soldiers stresses the support networks in place, as you may have seen in various news reports. Veterans wait for months for medical care…just imagine how long they wait for any other type of care.
Working with veterans has been an honor and a pleasure; one way that we as counselors and therapists can use our skills to contribute to America’s well-being.
Because we use the “Family Systems” model, we treat the entire family. This past summer, we sponsored “Gold Star Week” — a week of camp for children of slain soldiers. As sad as the program sounds, it was truly a celebration. The kids came to have a good time and that they did: swimming, hiking, canoeing, singing by the campfire. We were proud to hold such a beautiful event and plan to expand it for next summer!
